CAPP Board Members Reflect on Their Involvement and
Next Steps for the PRSS Data Registry |
The Central Appalachian Peer Partnership (CAPP) is an advisory board providing direction for research focused on recovery science in Central Appalachia. The CAPP is comprised of Peer Recovery Support Specialists (PRSS) working in six Central Appalachian states (TN, VA, NC, WV, KY, and OH), and is leading the launch of a PRSS Data Registry project. The Data Registry aims to enroll over 1,000 PRSS, and will allow STARS to do more in-depth research on the science of peer recovery support. The ultimate goal of this project is to better understand PRSS professionals and the important impact they make on the recovery process.
The CAPP will soon launch a baseline survey to start enrolling PRSS in the data registry, as well as develop follow-up surveys focused on stigma, medications for substance use, and the role of PRSS in different professional settings.
In recent interviews with a selection of CAPP Board members, they communicated the unique value of PRSS for improving client outcomes. They also appreciate the opportunity to share resources with each other and refer clients to programs in other states through the CAPP network. Similarly, CAPP Board members have been instrumental in recruiting clinics for the STARS MOUD Clinic Research Exchange. |

"It’s been really neat to see the different states come together on this advisory board, to really talk about what peer work looks like in all the states. It’s neat for me to take those ideas back to the executive leadership team at the state level to talk about what other places are doing and how we can best utilize employees in the PRSS role."
Kim Boyd, Southwest Virginia Regional Recovery Oriented Service Coordinator, DBHDS (Virginia)
"I think it’s going to be groundbreaking in the field; everyone talks about peer support, but people don’t know the details of the job, the emotional effort required, and how it helps the client. These surveys will have hard evidence of that data; it’s necessary to describe our jobs better."
Della Maxey, Peer Support Intake Monitor, Liberty Place Recovery Center for Women (Kentucky)
"Some professionals stigmatize medication assisted treatment (MAT), and it goes all the way up, from a peer in a meeting to leaders of corporations. They don’t see MAT as recovery and treatment, and that’s killing people. I’m hopeful that what we learn from the PRSS data registry will spur more research into MAT and stigma and what we can do."
Bethany Sparkman, Lead Therapist and Mobile Crisis Response Therapist, Frontier Health (Tennessee) |

The STARS MOUD Clinic Research Exchange Continues to Recruit Clinics
The STARS Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) Clinic Research Exchange is a practice-based research network that aims to advance research on behavioral interventions and other support services that can facilitate treatment and recovery among individuals with OUD. The Exchange is comprised of clinics in Central Appalachia that provide MOUD/medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and office-based opioid/addiction treatment (OBOT/OBAT) programs. We believe that collaborative, community-engaged research will discover effective solutions, faster.

I-STARR Recovery Housing & MOUD Webinar Series |
The Infrastructure for Studying Treatment and Addiction Recovery Resources (I-STARR) project seeks to foster and support research on recovery housing for persons treated with MOUD. Despite strong evidence for the effectiveness for medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), individuals with opioid use disorder face a number of obstacles to accessing recovery housing, and providers of recovery housing face challenges in addressing the needs of individuals being treated with MOUD. I-STARR Webinars focus on addressing these obstacles and challenges.
As part of the I-STARR webinar series, there are two tracks of training tailored specifically to recovery residence operators and researchers who may be new to studying recovery housing. I-STARR is funded in part by the NIH HEAL Initiative.
