Update on the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) Data Registry
The Central Appalachian Peer Partnership (CAPP) is an advisory board providing direction for research focused on recovery science in Central Appalachia. The CAPP is comprised of Peer Support Specialists (PSS) working in six Central Appalachian states (TN, VA, NC, WV, KY, and OH), and is leading the launch of a PSS Data Registry project. Please visit https://the-orcca.com/peer-data-registry for more information and to join.
Lunch & Learn Recording: MOVABLE
On October 25, 2023, Kristen Lillvis, Stefan Schöberlein, and Hallie Knipp presented the Movable Project, a platform for people in Appalachia and beyond to share, highlight, and document stories of recovery. Discussion centered around the logistics of collecting and archiving stories, ethical and legal considerations, and opportunities to partner.

"Patient Engagement in Medication Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder—Barriers, Facilitators, and the Role of Peer Recovery Support"
with Dr. Melissa Poulsen
Melissa Poulsen, PhD, will present findings from her qualitative research on multilevel barriers and facilitators to patient engagement in clinic-based treatment for opioid use disorder and the outgrowth of that research to a new project that integrates peer recovery specialists into treatment settings.

Melissa Poulsen, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in Population Health Sciences at Geisinger. As a researcher embedded within a health system, Dr. Poulsen conducts epidemiologic and translational research aimed at improving clinical care and patient health. Dr. Poulsen is currently funded by NIDA to study opioid use disorder (OUD), including research on patient engagement in medication treatment for OUD, a new collaborative project studying the integration of peer recovery support services into outpatient OUD treatment, and as a member of the Health Systems Node of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network.

The STARS MOUD Clinic Research Exchange Continues to Recruit Clinics

The STARS Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) Clinic Research Exchange is a practice-based research network that aims to advance research on behavioral interventions and other support services that can facilitate treatment and recovery among individuals with OUD. The Exchange is comprised of clinics in Central Appalachia that provide MOUD/medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and office-based opioid/addiction treatment (OBOT/OBAT) programs. We believe that collaborative, community-engaged research will discover effective solutions, faster.

Within the Central Appalachia region comprising six states identified for the sample,

19 clinics have enrolled as of November, including at least two clinics in each state except for Ohio. The clinics represent a mix of OTPs and OBOTs/OBATs offering a range of MOUD. The enrolled clinics also vary by number of MOUD clients served, from fewer than ten clients to 550 clients.

Please help us recruit more participating clinics!
If you are familiar with a clinic that provides MOUD/MAT and that would be a good fit for the research exchange, please click the button below to contact Dr. Angela Hagaman.

Reaching Rural Initiative
The Reaching Rural one-year planning initiative is designed for rural justice and public safety practitioners; public health and behavioral health practitioners; city, county, and tribal leaders; and community groups. The planning initiative empowers rural practitioners to build deeper networks, particularly across sectors; adopt bold solutions to the persistent challenge of substance use and misuse in rural communities; and reimagine how diverse systems with different missions can engage with one another to more effectively serve justice involved individuals with substance use or co-occurring disorders.

This program is supported by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP).

Applications are due December 15, 2023. Learn more and access the application here:
2024 National Conference on Addiction Recovery Science
The inaugural 2024 National Conference on Addiction Recovery Science aims to bring together researchers at all stages of training and experience to stimulate exchange of ideas and allow for the presentation of cutting-edge research across the spectrum of alcohol and other drug use disorders and affected populations. This is the first national conference specifically dedicated to substance use disorder recovery science.

The deadline for submission of proposals is January 5, 2024.
